Explore the centre of the polis – the meeting place of free citizens

The ancient Agora was the political, commercial and social centre of ancient Athens and was also built on from the 5th century BC. After the destruction of the Agora by the Persians in 479/480 BC, intensive reconstruction work was carried out. Numerous administrative, commercial and negotiation buildings were erected on this public square.

Today, in addition to the well-preserved Hephaisteion, we find the Stoa Poikile and other columned halls, the temples of Ares and Apollo, the mint and many other buildings and places of worship that have been preserved as ruins. The Stoa of Attalos has been reconstructed and houses a museum with artefacts found on the site of the ancient agora.
