The public transport network in Athens is very wide. In addition to numerous bus and trolleybus lines, it includes three metro and tram lines as well as an suburban railway system.
Important: You must validate your ticket once before your first journey! Insert it into one of the colourful stamp machines in the entrance area or on the platform of the Athens metro, at the tram stop or in the front area of the buses. If the ticket is still valid but does not work anymore due to soiling or damage, the station staff will help you.
Children: Under the age of 6, all public transport and airport transfers are free of charge. Children aged 6 and over will receive the same ticket as adults. The price for 72 hours is 22 € and for 144 hours 44 €. Please note that a service activation fee of €5 is charged for each ticket - it is already included in the final price of your booking.
With your ticket you can travel comfortably from the airport to the city center and back. You can choose whether you want to travel by metro or express bus.
Transport from Athens Airport by Metro: Metro Line 3 (blue line): Aghia Marina-Douk. Plakentias Airport, every 30 minutes, daily from 06:30 am to 11:30 pm. Travel time approx. 40 minutes.
Athens Airport shuttle bus: operate 24/7 on the four different routes and depart from the arrival terminal (exits 4 and 5): Bus X93: Kifissos KTEL Station-Airport (travel time 65 min). Bus X95: Syntagma-Airport (travel time 70 min). Bus X96: Port of Priaeus-Airport (journey time 90 minutes). Bus X97: Eliniko Metro Station-Airport (travel time 100 min).
The metro in Athens is fast, safe and reliable, making it the best choice for your movement in Athens. It currently operates three lines with a total off 65 stations. Additionally extensions of the metro network are currently taking place and a fourth line is planned. The metro stations in Athens also serve as small museums and art galleries. Due to the historical past of the city, extensions were interrupted quiet often to protect the archaelogical treasures. Today, a lot of these saved findings are exhibited in many stations. For example, the station "Syntagma" houses a permanent exhibition of objects found during the construction work in the upper area. The Athens tram system is very modern. It consists of three lines with a total of 48 stops. "Syntagma" is the starting point and from there the tram network spreads along the Saronic Gulf Coast and connects the city centre with various beaches and southern suburbs.
The suburban railway ("Proastiakos" in Greek) operates two routes in Athens. It runs daily from 5 am in the morning until midnight. It is therefore the ideal alternative for tourists to reach the Athens airport.
The bus connections are definitely most developed. The Athens bus network consist of about 300 bus lines and 25 trolleybus lines connecting all sectors in the greater area of Athens. All means of public transport in Athens usually run daily from 5 or 5:30 am until midnight. During rush hour the Athens metro runs every 4 to 5 minutes and on Fridays and Saturdays the trains run extended until 2 am in the morning. During the holiday periods the travel times may differ from the usual times.
The Athens City Pass guarantess free travel with public transport for 72 hours. If you choose public transport for 144 hours, you will receive two 72 hour tickets. Please make sure to use the tickets one after the other, which means please stamp the second ticket only after the 72 hours of the first ticket have passed.
