Museum of Photography – Helmut Newton Foundation

Visit the Museum of Photography and get free entrance with the Berlin WelcomeCard all inclusive and save € 10.

The Museum of Photography in Berlin is a part of the Berlin State Museums and serves as an exhibition, research, and documentation center for photography. The building is divided into two facilities, one of which is home to works by the Helmut-Newton Foundation, and the other will present a part of the photography collection (a department of the art library).

The museum is in the former Landwehr Kasino next to the Zoologischer Garten railway station, which was inaugurated by Emporer Wilhelm II in 1909. The simple face of the building is deceiving because the inside of the museum has (to this day) grandiose party halls, guest rooms, and restaurant. The emperor’s hall on the second floor was 11 meters tall and 665 m2 big. After World War II, the building was passed into the possession of the Berlin Senate and served as a space for various exhibitions and also as a depot. In 2004, the Museum of Photography was opened here and uses 2000 m2 worth of space to present exhibition objects.

Description Museum of Photography – Helmut Newton Foundation

On both floors of the Museum of Photography, works from the collection of the Helmut-Newtown Foundation are displayed. These works are found in the permanent exhibition, “Helmut Newton’s Private Property,” as well as in the exhibitions, “Helmut Newton: Sex and Landscapes,” “Newton Nachtwey, Lachapelle: Men, War & Peace,” “Pigozzi and the Paparazzi,” and “Helmut Newton Polaroids,” which also has art pieces of Newton’s wife and other companions.

In the emperor’s hall on the second floor of the museum, you can find photography from the art library collection. This rotated exhibition (between 2004 and 2008) presents works by various artists and reflects the diversity of photography. In this exhibition, represented artists included Raimund Kummer, Phillip Schönborn, Regina Schmeken, and M+M. What was impressive about this exhibition were the installations that engaged with the destruction of the room in World War II. The relationship between photography with sculptures, films, religion, and history was questioned time and time again.

Since the renovation in 2010, the museum now houses mainly photography from the 19th to 21st century. These multi-faceted exhibitions will be furnished with objects from the Berlin State Museums, as well as with works by important photographers or works that reflect important themes about the history of photography. Regular lectures, as well as symposium of current issues take place here.
