The Dubai Museum is located in Al Fahidi Fort, which was built in 1787, making it the oldest building in the city. Before becoming a museum, Al Fahidi Fort was a defence Fort, an arsenal for weapons and also used as a prison for outlaws. After renovation works Al Fahidi Fort was turned into a historical museum and opened in 1971. Divided into themes learn about Dubai's rural, agricultural & urban life and how they have been affected by its unique landscape: desert, marine, coast and mountains. You can also admire traditional residential houses and a market as it looked like during the 1950s. Stroll through the museum and explore various authentic monuments, samples, audios & videos as well as other interesting features. Since the seaside is an important part of the region, the Dubai Museum offers interesting information about shipbuilding, shipping equipment as well as the profession of pearl diving, which used to be an important part of the economic income before the fossil oil discovery.
