Why Rome? The Eternal City and its magic

Rome isn't just a city – it's a journey through time. Nowhere else in the world do ancient ruins, baroque churches, and modern espresso bars exist side-by-side as naturally as in the Eternal City. Strolling through the Roman Forum, you literally walk in the footsteps of Caesar. Sitting in Trastevere in the evening, you understand why millions of people return here every year.

Rome is the capital of Italy and one of the most visited places in the world. With over 2,700 years of history, the city boasts more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than almost any other place on the planet. The Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel are just a few of the most famous among hundreds of sights.

But Rome is more than just its postcard-perfect scenery. The city thrives on its piazzas, where locals drink their espresso standing up in the mornings, on the markets in Campo de' Fiori, and on the narrow streets of Trastevere, where the tourist bustle suddenly fades away.

Culinary Rome is a world of its own: Cacio e Pepe, Carbonara, Coda alla Vaccinara – Roman cuisine is down-to-earth, intense and distinctive.

Frequently Asked Questions about Rome – Your Travel FAQ

The answers to your most important questions about travelling to Rome, including sights, costs and planning.

When is the best time to travel to Rome?

The best time to visit Rome is from April to June and from September to October. During these months, the temperatures are pleasant (18–25°C), the tourist crowds are manageable, and the city is at its most beautiful – especially spring, with its blossoms in the Piazza di Spagna, is unforgettable. July and August are hot (often over 35°C) and very crowded. Winter (November–February) is quiet, affordable, and ideal for visiting museums without queues. Our tip: late April or early October for the best value.

How many days should you plan for Rome?

For a first visit to Rome, we recommend at least 3-4 days to experience the main highlights without stress. In 3 days, you can visit the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican, Pantheon, and Trastevere – if you plan well and start early. 5-7 days allow you to wander off the beaten track: local markets, hidden churches, and day trips to Tivoli. Those who stay longer than 7 days will discover the neighborhoods of Pigneto, Testaccio, and Garbatella – the authentic, unfiltered Rome.

What are the absolute must-see sights in Rome?

The absolute highlights: Colosseum & Roman Forum (the iconic amphitheater and the heart of ancient Rome), Vatican & Sistine Chapel (Michelangelo's masterpiece and St. Peter's Basilica), Pantheon (one of the best-preserved buildings of antiquity, €5 entrance fee since 2023), Trevi Fountain (visit early in the morning!), Borghese Gallery (Bernini's sculptures – advance booking required!) and Castel Sant'Angelo with its spectacular Tiber panorama.
