Underground archaeological site: Vicus Caprarius

The Vicus Caprarius archaeological site is an underground area beneath the Trevi district. This is where the most famous fountain in the world, the Trevi Fountain, got its name.

The Vicus Caprarius archaeological site consists of a complex of buildings from Roman times and a preserved section of the Aqua Virgo (Virgin) aqueduct. The aqueduct still fulfils its purpose today and supplies water to the city's most famous monumental fountains, such as the Trevi Fountain.

For this reason, the archaeological site of Vicus Caprarius is also known as the ‘City of Water’. Vicus Caprarius is just a stone's throw away from the famous Trevi Fountain and is located in the same building as the ‘Cineteca Nazionale’ cinema. The excavation site was discovered in 1999 during the restoration of the film theatre. Visit the imposing building complex and a museum with marble mosaics, statues and ornate marble decorations from the imperial era.
