Whether it’s the "Hirtenknabe" by Franz von Lenbach or the paintings "Rübezahl" and "Des Knaben Wunderhorn" by Moritz von Schwind - almost everyone has seen illustrations of these works.
The originals of these illustrations can be admired in the Collection Schack, a true gem among the museums in Munich that is dedicated to German paintings of late romanticism. As an art collector, Count Schack had promoted young, still little-known German artists, who had no chance on the art market in the 1860s and 70s. Such artists included Moritz von Schwind, Arnold Böcklin and Anselm Feuerbach.
In these pictures, you will encounter ancient myths, the world of modern poetry from Dante and Petrarch to Goethe and the German Middle Ages with its legends and fairy tales.
After the renovation, the museum presents itself in a new way that invites visitors into a romantic world full of images and thoughts.
