As befits a ruling house, the Wittelsbach family owned a whole chamber full of treasures in their residence in Munich. Royal crowns and precious vessels made of precious materials and masterpieces of craftsmanship and exotic curiosities are some of the treasures you can see here.
Duke Albrecht V. of Bavaria anno 1565 had the foresight to decree that the family treasures should not be sold under any circumstances. While the artworks were previously shown only to a select audience, today they are open to the general public.
In the ten exhibition rooms of the Schatzkammer in the Königsbau of the Munich Residenz, visitors can view almost two millennia worth of art and cultural history, with over 1200 objects.
