Built in the 15th century, the Château de Pierrefonds was completely renovated by the architect Viollet le Duc in the 19th century and converted into an imperial residence for Napoleon III. On the south-eastern edge of the forest of Compiègne, north of Paris, it has been listed as a 'monument historique' since 1848.
The Château often gives the impression that it was built especially for an adventurous film because of its variously painted and sculpted furnishings, its defensive system and drawbridge, walkways and flat shafts, not to mention the three reconstructions of medieval siege machines.
