The present monument is part of the former palace of the Capetian Dynasty. In the 14th century Charles V decided to stop the use of the palace and to establish his court here. The gatekeeper was appoonted by the king and guarded the palace. At the end of the 18th century many people were imprisoned by the revolutionary tribunal.
