The Institute of the Arab World was founded in 1980 to promote understanding between France and the Arab world. The architect received the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1989 for the design of this building. The aim of the institute is to disseminate knowledge about the Arab world. The museum’s mission is to explore this knowledge from the perspective of cultural heritage. Its collections bear witness to the cultures that have spread from earliest antiquity to the regions that make up the Arab world today.

Changing exhibitions and oriental delights

Every year, the Institute organises temporary exhibitions that highlight the richness and diversity of the Arab world’s creative potential. Some exhibitions focus on the historical heritage of these regions, such as the exhibition ‘Osiris: The Sunken Mysteries of Egypt’, while others showcase contemporary Arab culture, with projects ranging from ‘Hip-Hop – From the Bronx to the Arab Streets’ to ‘Contemporary Morocco’. The exhibitions can also focus on social themes, such as ‘Hajj: The Pilgrimage to Mecca’ or on the links between the East and the West with ‘The Orient Express’. Great emphasis is placed on the educational component of each exhibition to ensure that it appeals to a wide audience that includes people of all ages and backgrounds.

Complement your exploration of the Arab world with an experience of culinary delights in the AWI’s three restaurants. There is something for every taste in the AWI’s three restaurant areas. Whether you enjoy a delicious tea during your visit, take a quick break or savour the gastronomic menu in the restaurant with panoramic views.
