What awaits you on site

Port Royal des Champs was a Cistercian abbey south-west of Versailles. The nunnery was founded in 1204 near an existing monastic abbey and was accepted into the Cistercian order at an early stage. The nuns repeatedly came into conflict with the rulers, which led to a turbulent history for the convent. The convent was finally destroyed in 1710 at the instigation of Louis XIV. Today’s museum covers 35 hectares of land, on which the ruins of the convent and some outbuildings as well as the former residents’ kitchen garden are located.
