Castel Sant'Angelo: from Hadrian's Mausoleum to Rome's legendary fortress

Castel Sant'Angelo is one of the most fascinating attractions in Rome, combining nearly two thousand years of history within its imposing walls. Originally commissioned by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD as a monumental mausoleum, the building was later transformed into a military fortress, a papal residence, a treasury and a prison.

Located on the banks of the Tiber River near the Vatican, Castel Sant'Angelo played a key role in protecting the city for centuries. Through the fortified Passetto di Borgo, popes could reach the Vatican safely during periods of unrest and invasion. Over time, the fortress also housed notable prisoners and became an important symbol of papal power.

Today, visitors can explore the castle's spiral ramp, Renaissance apartments, historic prison cells and secret corridors while learning about its unique evolution from imperial tomb to papal stronghold. The upper terraces provide some of the best panoramic views in Rome, offering spectacular sights of St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican and the historic centre.

Whether you are interested in Roman history, Renaissance art or simply looking for one of the best viewpoints in the Eternal City, Castel Sant'Angelo is an essential stop during any visit to Rome.

With your Castel Sant'Angelo ticket, you can also enjoy free admission to the Boncompagni Ludovisi Decorative Arts Museum and the Hendrik Christian Andersen Museum.
