In 1555 a ghetto was built on the banks of the Tiber. At that time the ghetto was a prison area in Rome, surrounded by fences and gates. Pope Paul IV Carafa announced a series of restrictions for the Jewish community that would marginalize them for centuries. However, since the former ghetto represents the relationship between the Jews and the city of Rome, the Jewish community chose this place as the seat of its Great Synagogue, around which the Jewish Quarter now extends.
