Description public transport Athens

The public transportation network in Athens is quite extensive, comprising from numerous bus and electric bus lines, 3 metro and 3 tramway lines and a suburban railway system.

The Athens Metro is fast, safe and reliable, making it by far the best way to travel in the city. It operates currently 3 lines with a total of 65 stations. Additional metro extensions are underway as well as a fourth metro line. The metro stations in Athens serve also as small museums or art galleries. Due to the historical past of the city the constructions were many times held back in order for rescue archeology to be employed. Many of these rescued artifacts are now being displayed in the stations. For example at Syntagma the upper level of the station hosts a permanent exhibition of objects found during the construction works. Apart from their archeological interest small concerts or photo exhibitions are taking place from time to time in various stations. All of them have been decorated with works from renowned Greek artists and classical music is often being played from the loudspeakers.

Τhe Athens Tram is a modern tram network system. It has 3 lines with a total of 48 stops. It starts at Syntagma and runs along the city’s Saronic Gulf coastline, connecting the city centre with the various beaches of the southern suburbs.

The suburban rail (prostakios in Greek) consists of two routes in Athens and the trains run approximately from 5 am to midnight daily. For tourists it is an alternative to reach the airport.

The bus and electric bus /trolley network in Athens is definitely the most extensive. It consists of about 300 bus lines and 25 trolley lines connecting all parts of the Athens Metropolitan Area.

All means of public transport in Athens run typically daily from 5 or 5:30 am to midnight. The metro runs every 4-5 minutes at rush hour and on Fridays and Saturdays it operates until 2.00am. During public holidays the timetable might change. The price for 72 hours is 22 € and for 144 hours 44 €. Please note that a service activation fee of 5 € is charged for each ticket - it is already included in the final price of your booking.
