Description Temple of Olympian Zeus

The temple was dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian Gods. Its construction started in the 6th century BC but it was completed only in the 2nd century AD under the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian. In that time it was considered to be the largest temple in Greece. It is made from Pentelic marble and had originally 104 Corinthian style columns. In the Byzantine and Christian times parts of the temple were used as building material.
Today the visitors can still see a part of the temple and 15 of its columns that are still standing in their original position.
