The construction of the Olympieion or Temple of Olympian Zeus began in the 6th century BC but it wasn’t completed until the 2nd century AD under the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian. The temple is supported by 17 -meter high Corinthian style columns and was one of the largest in ancient Greece. It is situated 500 metres east of the Acropolis.
The temple is open daily in the summer and the winter season so that all guests of the Greek capital have the chance to see the site of this former majestic temple.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus stands today between two major streets that lead to the centre of Athens. The site itself though preserves its serene atmosphere. Directly opposite, as you cross one of these streets you find yourselves in the traditional neighborhood of Plaka. There you can enjoy walking on the small streets under the Acropolis.
Metro line 2 to Acropolis
The easiest way to reach the temple is undoubtedly the metro. After you exit head towards Syggrou Avenue and cross it. By now you should be already seeing the columns of the temple. The distance from the station to the temple is 10 minutes or less.

The temple is located within short walking distance from the Acropolis, the New Acropolis Museum and Plaka. Plaka is a beautiful traditionally built neighborhood that offers many options for shopping, dining and entertainment. The National Gardens and the Parliament are situated in a short walking distance.
The temple was dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian Gods. Its construction started in the 6th century BC but it was completed only in the 2nd century AD under the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian. In that time it was considered to be the largest temple in Greece. It is made from Pentelic marble and had originally 104 Corinthian style columns. In the Byzantine and Christian times parts of the temple were used as building material.
Today the visitors can still see a part of the temple and 15 of its columns that are still standing in their original position.
