Visit the Basilica di San Pietro di Castello in Venice

This former bishop church, Basilica di San Pietro di Castello, is located away from the hustle on the San Pietro di Castello island. This church is the only church in Venice whose tower is completely adorned by marble. The interior of the church is also just as majestic—an especially interesting piece is its main alter, which is made from multicolored marble and is used to store the ashes of the first pastor, Lorenzo Giustinioni. Additionally, the church is also home to the masterwork „Condemnation of the Snakes“ by Pietro Liberi as well as to a unique cross made out of wood and copper.

Basilica di San Pietro di Castello: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance combined

The Basilica di San Pietro di Castello on the island of Castello in Venice holds a significant place in the city's history and religious tradition. With origins dating back to the 7th century, this church served as the original cathedral of Venice for many centuries before the title passed to the Basilica di San Marco in the 19th century.

Architecturally, the Basilica di San Pietro di Castello is a fascinating blend of styles, incorporating elements from the Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance periods. Its exterior facade is characterized by its simplicity, while the interior boasts a rich collection of art and historical significance.

Although it no longer holds the title of the city's main cathedral, the Basilica di San Pietro di Castello retains its significance as a place of prayer and pilgrimage for the faithful. It remains a spiritual center on the island of Castello, one of the six Sestieri of Venice, and stands as a testament to the enduring religious heritage of the city. Visitors to the basilica can explore its historical and architectural treasures while appreciating its role in Venice's past and present.
