The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giglio was built in 1681 and is also known as Santa Maria Zobenigo. The façade of the church has a typical baroque Venetian design and was erected as a monument to the Barbaro family. Instead of Christian figures, the façade consists of portraits of the family, town plans and maps of places where Antonio Barbaro served. Inside, you can admire paintings and sculptures of Venetian art by famous artists such as Tintoretto, Rubens and Alessandro Vittoria.

The building is located on Campo Santa Maria Zobenigo, to the west of St Mark's Square. It was remodelled between 1678 and 1681 by Giuseppe Sardi for Admiral Antonio Barbaro and has one of the most beautiful Venetian Baroque façades in the whole of Venice.

The façade of the baroque church

The special feature: The exterior of the church has no Christian statues or reliefs. Instead, it features marble reliefs from various places where Antonio Barbaro worked, including Candia, Zadar, Padua, Rome, Corfu and Split. His own statue as the main benefactor in the centre, created by Josse de Corte, is flanked by representations of Honour, Virtue, Glory and Wisdom.

The other statues are his brothers. The coat of arms of the Barbaro family is carved in relief at the top of the façade.

The nave

The ceiling of the nave is decorated with a large painting. Along the nave are painted depictions of the Stations of the Cross (1755-1756) or the Stations of the Cross by various artists. To the right of the entrance to the nave is the Molin Chapel with a Madonna and Child and the young St John, the only painting by the Flemish painter Rubens in Venice.

The altar

The altar is flanked by statues depicting the Annunciation. Behind the high altar, in the chancel, are paintings of the evangelists by Jacopo Tintoretto. The shutters on the organ are the work of Alessandro Vittoria. Another sculpture can be found in the second chapel on the right-hand side of San Gregorio Barbarigo.
