The Scuola San Rocco is one of the largest confraternities in Venice. It was established in the 13th century and had influence on the religious and communal life of Venice. Due to the 20-year long work of the famous Venetian artist, Tintoretto, this confraternity building is now home to various paintings and ceiling paintings that depict more than 60 stories from the Old and New Testament and are considered as masterworks. For some art lovers, the Scuola San Rocco is the Venetian equivalent to the Sistine Chapel because of its many Tintoretto masterpieces.

History and art treasures of the Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice

Impressive collection of paintings by Tintoretto

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice holds a fascinating historical significance. It was founded in the 16th century, specifically in the year 1478, in response to the growing plague epidemic that plagued Venice. The Brotherhood of the Black Monks, responsible for the Scuola, decided to declare Saint Roch of Montpellier as their patron saint, as he was regarded in folklore as a miraculous healer against the plague.

Later in the 16th century, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco underwent a complete renovation and expansion. During this period, the Brotherhood commissioned the renowned Venetian painter Jacopo Tintoretto to adorn the rooms with an impressive collection of paintings. Tintoretto dedicated over two decades to this project, creating some of his most significant works that now grace the walls of the Scuola.

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco served not only as a meeting place for the Brotherhood and for the veneration of Saint Roch but also as a center for social and charitable activities. The school played a crucial role in the history of Venice and its community. Today, the Scuola Grande di San Rocco houses an impressive collection of Tintoretto's paintings, including his famous works such as "The Adoration of the Shepherds" and "The Crucifixion."

Visiting this historical site allows guests to not only experience the religious and cultural history of Venice but also to admire the impressive artistry of one of the greatest Venetian painters of all time.
