Although having roots in the 9th century, the Chiesa di San Giovanni as well as the entire market place and warehouses in Rialto had to be rebuilt after a fire that occurred in 1514. For this reason, the structure has a uniform appearance, in which the church is built harmoniously in a Classical Resnaissance architecture style. Artists like Titian and Pordenone also assisted in the restoration and created alter paintings in the church that are seen as masterpieces nowadays. The rest of the interior of the church was further restored and furnished with the support of fraternities, guilds, and craftsmen societies.
