Casa Amatller: a masterpiece of Catalan modernism
Casa Amatller in Barcelona, built in 1898 by chocolate mogul Antoni Amatller, was designed by Puig i Cadafalch and reopened after extensive renovation. The building impresses with its almond blossom motifs, ornate wrought iron and gargoyles. It has been a protected monument of art since 1976 and can be explored on (audio) guided tours. A souvenir shop and chocolate café round off the visit.
Several architectural styles combined in one house
The story of Casa Amatller began when Amatller commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch to renovate the house. This led to a radical remodelling of the building. Puig i Cadafalch skilfully blended the local Art Nouveau style, Modernisme based on traditional craftsmanship, with neo-Gothic flair and an unusual stepped cornice inspired by Dutch houses. Some of the most renowned artists of the time, including Jujol, worked side by side with Puig i Cadafalch on this project.
Casa Amatller not only preserves its original furnishings and decoration, but also houses an impressive archaeological glass collection. Antoni Amatller was not only a chocolate manufacturer, but also a passionate chocolatier whose delicious creations are still available today.
