The Medici Museum, housed in one of the city’s most beautiful buildings, is the place to discover the history of the world’s most famous dynasty. From Lorenzo the Magnificent to the Princess of Palatina, the memory of the Medici family is preserved here and passed on through the exhibition of valuable collections of works of art, historical relics, original documents, faithful reconstructions and multimedia installations.
The museum’s headquarters is one of the city’s most important monuments. It is a building designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and started in 1432. Construction was interrupted as early as 1437 and remained unfinished for five hundred years. The Brunelleschi Rotunda is the first building with a central plan in the entire Renaissance and was originally part of the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, the most important humanist library in the world, which was visited by Cosimo the Elder, Lorenzo the Magnificent and Leo X.

The Medici family originally rose from the banking sector, establishing themselves as one of Europe’s leading banking families in the 14th century. However, their true rise began when Cosimo de’ Medici, also known as “Cosimo the Elder”, entered the political arena. He skilfully used his financial power to gain political influence and became the de facto ruler of Florence in the 1430s, although the city was formally a republic.
