The Speicherstadtmuseum gives you an insight into times gone by: experience the beginnings of world trade at one of the most important locations
Speicherstadt owes its existence to the ingenuity of Hamburg’s merchants. In order not to burden trade in the harbour with customs duties, it became necessary to create an area which, as a free port, did not belong to the German customs territory. In this enclave, the traditional privilege of Hamburg merchants to store, refine and process imported goods duty-free was to continue to apply. The Speicherstadtmuseum guides visitors through the history of the development and utilisation of the world’s largest warehouse complex, which was built on softwood piles in Hamburg Hafer from the end of the 19th century.
What is there to see?
The central theme of the museum is the work in the Speicherstadt. Immerse yourself in the world of the quartermasters (storekeepers): every imported good passes through their hands, is weighed, sorted, possibly refined and professionally stowed away. In the museum you will find typical tools that were needed to trade coffee, tea, cocoa or rubber. Look forward to your visit to the historic Speicherstadt warehouse district, which has been a World Heritage Site since 2015. In the Speicherstadtmuseum, on a warehouse floor that is over 100 years old, you can also catch a glimpse of the original construction method of the warehouses: the riveted iron girders. The Speicherstadtmuseum is just as suitable for children as it is for adults. You will find the Speicherstadtmuseum in Block L, on the ground floor of a building built in 1888.
