A palace of superlatives in the heart of Madrid

The Palacio Real Madrid is not just an architectural masterpiece, but also a living testament to Spanish royal history. As Europe's largest royal palace with over 135,000 square metres of floor space and 3,418 rooms, it offers you a journey through centuries of Spanish history. Although King Felipe VI and the royal family now reside at the Palacio de la Zarzuela, the Royal Palace still serves as the official residence for state ceremonies and represents the splendour of bygone eras.

With your audio guide, you'll immerse yourself in the fascinating world of the Spanish monarchy and discover captivating stories about court life. The palace houses one of the world's most important art collections, featuring works by Goya, Velázquez, Caravaggio and many other masters. Particularly impressive are the magnificent ceiling frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, which transform the Throne Room into a true work of art. The Royal Armoury displays historic armour and weapons, including the original armour of Emperor Charles V, immortalised by Titian in his famous equestrian portrait. Each room tells its own story: from the sumptuous porcelain collection to the royal library with rare manuscripts.

The audio guide takes you through the most important halls and explains the historical context in an entertaining way. Particularly fascinating is the Royal Pharmacy, which is still in operation today and preserves centuries-old traditions of healing arts.

History and architecture of the Royal Palace

The current Palacio Real was built between 1738 and 1755 in Baroque style, after the original Alcázar fell victim to a devastating fire in 1734. Architects Filippo Juvarra and Giovanni Battista Sacchetti created a masterpiece that reflects the splendour of the Bourbon dynasty. The imposing façade with its Ionic columns and elegant balustrade is an impressive example of 18th-century architecture.
