Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus – Art museum in the Lenbachpalais

The art museum of the municipal gallery in the Lenbachhaus was founded in 1929 during the Weimar Republic. The museum is located in the historic villa and studio building of the Munich painter Franz von Lenbach (1836-1904) and extends to the nearby art building.

The museum houses the largest collection of Blaue Reiter art in the world. These include many works by important artists such as Alexej Jawlensky, Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Franz Marc, August Macke, Marianne von Werefkin and Paul Klee. Other focal points of the collection are 19th-century art, classical modernism, post-war modernism and contemporary art. In addition to 19th-century Munich painting, Art Nouveau and New Objectivity, the collection includes works by Joseph Beuys and examples of major trends in international contemporary art. 

The Lenbach Palace, with its magnificent Italianate design, is worth seeing in itself, but it is the additions that make the municipal gallery a true oasis of art. The Kunstbau and the Kubus provide a unique backdrop for the art on display, while the garden and the museum café make the ensemble a place of peace and contemplation.
