Merchant Adventurers' Hall

The Merchant Adventurer's Hall of York is one of the world's most fascinating medieval guildhalls, continuously owned by the same organisation for 660 years. This impressive timber-framed structure from 1357 transports you to an era when bold merchants made York a major trading centre. A merchant adventurer was a risk-taking entrepreneur who invested their own capital in overseas trade, bringing exotic goods back to York.  

When you visit Merchant Adventurer's Hall, you're diving into this captivating world. The guildhall houses three remarkable areas: the Great Hall where merchants gathered for business and social occasions, the Undercroft which served as an almshouse until 1900, and the Chapel for spiritual reflection. Britain's largest timber-framed building still in use impresses with its complex roof construction of crown posts, held together entirely with wooden pegs. The Company of Merchant Adventurers of the City of York continues today as a charitable organisation, regularly using the building for events.
