The North Yorkshire Moors Railway proudly holds the title of Britain’s most popular heritage railway. It takes you on a 24-mile journey through time across the breathtaking North York Moors National Park, home to one of England’s most beautiful moorland landscapes.
Since its reopening in 1973, the route from Pickering to Whitby has become a magnet for railway enthusiasts and nature lovers from around the world. Originally planned by George Stephenson in 1836, this railway line has been lovingly restored and now offers an authentic steam train experience like no other. During your journey through the vast heather moorlands and deep valleys of North York Moors National Park, you'll experience the romantic atmosphere of bygone times. The rhythmic pounding of the steam engine and the characteristic whistle of steam locomotives create a unique backdrop for your adventure. The journey becomes particularly enchanting when you reach the world-famous Goathland Railway Station. Harry Potter fans will instantly recognise it as Hogsmeade Station, where film history and railway tradition meet. The beautifully preserved Victorian architecture makes every stop a special experience.
With over 350,000 visitors annually, North Yorkshire Moors Railway is not only the UK's most popular heritage railway but possibly the busiest steam heritage line in the world. The route takes you through picturesque villages like Levisham and Grosmont before reaching its destination in the charming coastal town of Whitby.
From Pickering to Whitby: A legendary route
The 24-mile route of North Yorkshire Moors Railway is far more than just a train ride – it's a journey through history. The railway runs through six picturesque stations: Pickering as the southern starting point in 1930s style, idyllic Levisham in Newton Dale valley, remote Newton Dale Halt for walkers, famous Goathland Station, Grosmont with its impressive locomotive sheds, and finally historic seaside Whitby. Each station tells its own story and offers unique experiences for visitors of all ages.
