Stump Cross Caverns

Step into a fascinating underground world and discover Stump Cross Caverns – a true natural wonder that has been forming for over 500,000 years. These impressive limestone caves lie 389 metres above sea level beneath Greenhow Hill in the Yorkshire Dales, offering you an unforgettable subterranean adventure.  

Stump Cross Caverns were discovered in 1860 by brothers William and Mark Newbould, who were actually searching for lead deposits. What they found was far more precious: an extensive cave system featuring spectacular rock formations, crystal-rich stalactites and stalagmites, plus prehistoric fossils. You'll wander through winding passages and admire the natural artworks that water has created over millennia.  

Particularly impressive are the coloured stalactites, formed by iron and lead deposits that give them their unique hues. The cave system extends for over 6 kilometres, with approximately 800 metres accessible to visitors. The constant temperature of 7°C makes the caves a perfect destination in any weather. For families, this is a real adventure – children will be fascinated by the glittering crystal formations and stories of prehistoric animals.  

At the visitor centre, you'll learn more about the geological history of the region and archaeological discoveries, including complete reindeer skeletons and wolverine bones. Stump Cross Caverns holds Site of Special Scientific Interest status and offers both self-guided and guided tours. Allow around 40-50 minutes for your underground expedition and be enchanted by this unique natural experience that brings ancient history to life.
