The last private owner, wealthy industrialist Frank Green, bought the property at the end of the 19th century and transformed it into a lavish show home, ready even for a visit from King Edward VII. The history of the house, however, stretches back much further, to 1100, when it served as the residence for the treasurers of York Minster. This incredible heritage is part of what makes a visit to the National Trust Treasurer's House so special.

The Ghost Stories of Treasurer's House
The most famous ghost story is that of the Roman soldiers. In 1953, a young apprentice plumber named Harry Martindale was working in the cellar when he suddenly heard a trumpet. Before his eyes, a group of Roman legionaries marched through the wall, visible only from the knees up. Terrified, he realised they were walking on the level of the old Roman road, which lies deep beneath the current cellar floor. Years later, archaeological findings confirmed the details of his description, which he never changed throughout his life.
