A windjammer sails around the world – and delights visitors as a museum ship
The turbulent history of the Rickmer Rickmers began in 1896, when the cargo ship with a load capacity of 3,000 tonnes was built. The preserved crew and officers’ quarters offer an insight into what life on the ship must have been like. In an exhibition on board, you can learn more about the voyages of the ship, which sailed as far as Australia and South America as well as around Cape Horn – with a sail area of 3,500 square metres! And after its life as a cargo ship, the proud vessel became a sail training ship for the Portuguese navy...
From long voyage to permanent mooring: experience maritime history here
The Rickmer Rickmers was purchased and restored by the "Windjammer für Hamburg" association in 1983. Steel plates were sandblasted and painted and the interior work was completed. The deck was covered with wood, the rigging completed, the engine room refitted and ballast taken on board. Today, a steam engine and one of the Krupp diesel engines can be seen in the engine room. The museum ship was then transferred to the specially established "Rickmer Rickmers Foundation".
