The Correr Museum is located directly on St Mark’s Square, in the Napoleonic wing, which was furnished as a residence for the rulers. The Napoleonic wing, with its two monumental façades, enchanting portico, airy salon and magnificent ballroom, still displays many of the typical features of the Bonaparte and Habsburg eras: the architecture and fresco decorations, as well as the neoclassical furnishings, are important witnesses to the culture and stylistic idioms of an era.
Equally worth seeing are the stately rooms that were furnished for the Habsburg court during the Austrian period, including the apartment of Empress Sissi. The magnificent rooms of the palace are decorated with valuable furniture, paintings and decorations, offering visitors an insight into the royal history of Venice.
Discover the unique art collection
The museum was named after Teodoro Correr, a Venetian art collector who bequeathed his extensive art collection to the city of Venice after his death. Correr left his extensive collection of works of art, historical artefacts and many other treasures to the city of Venice, which led to the foundation of this fascinating museum as early as 1830. The exhibition focuses on life and culture in the Venetian Republic, illustrated with bronze statues, paintings and books. Its diverse collections include paintings, sculptures, furniture, historical maps, coins, medals and historical costumes.
The rooms of the New Procuracies, where the main judicial institutions were based, illustrate the different aspects of Venetian culture, from everyday life to the life of the institutions, from maritime ventures to city festivals. On the second floor is the magnificent ‘Pinacoteca’, which houses important masterpieces of Venetian art from its origins to the 16th century. Nineteen rooms, decorated by Carlo Scarpa, in which countless masterpieces are exhibited. In the museum galleries you will find works by famous painters such as Canaletto, Giovanni Bellini and Tintoretto.
