About Hamburg

The Hamburg City Pass is your practical basis for a Hamburg sightseeing tour. With the Hamburg City Pass, you have your admission ticket for many sights, city tours and attractions in your pocket as soon as you arrive.

Sights and activities: Hamburg’s fame and reputation – actually: Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg – are rooted in the city’s history. The harbour on the Elbe with protected access to the North Sea made the city the "Gateway to the World". The merchants of the Hanseatic League made Hamburg a trading city and prosperous. The abundance of water – the Elbe with its harbour basins, the Alster, dammed up to form a lake in the middle of the city, the many canals that criss-cross the city and whose bridges gave rise to the nickname "Venice of the North" – is still one of the city’s special features. It is not only the cityscape that is characterised by this, many of the sights also revolve around the location on the water and everything that went with it. Explore merchant life and shipping history in the interesting Museum of Hamburg History, the Speicherstadtmuseum, the International Maritime Museum and on the museum ship Rickmer Rickmers or the Cap San Diego in Hamburg harbour – right by the Landungsbrücken. Visit the Elbphilharmonie, built on the foundations of an old warehouse building, on a guided landmark tour and organise a ticket at the visitor centre, which will take you directly to the Elbphilharmonie Plaza, where a fantastic view awaits you. Take a city tour with the hop-on hop-off bus in the red double-decker and get an overview of the city. Marvel at and discover the lifelike celebrities in the Panoptikum wax museum right on the famous Reeperbahn. The Hamburg City Pass also gives you free entry to historical museums such as the Museum der Arbeit, the internationally recognised "Museum am Rothenbaum: Kulturen und Künste der Welt" on Rothenbaumchaussee, the Altonaer Museum art and culture museum and the Jenisch Haus in a villa in Elbpark. Also worth a visit are the Hamburger Kunsthalle or the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, known as one of the most important museums of design in Europe. Climb the tower of St Michael’s Church, known as the Michel, the city’s landmark and one of Hamburg’s most popular sights. You can climb to the viewing platform of the Michel via a staircase or a lift. Enjoy the view over the harbour, the old town, the Reeperbahn ("the neighbourhood") and the Alster from a height of 106 metres. Let a guide take you on a two-hour Reeperbahn tour of the neighbourhood and learn more about everyday life in Hamburg’s most notorious district, St. Pauli. Hear stories from the red-light district and enjoy a free drink from a loft with a view of the Reeperbahn.

Climate and travelling time: When it comes to the best time to visit, the weather is usually the main consideration. The chance of good weather is greatest between May and September. But Hamburg is worth a visit in any weather and at any time of year – it just depends on the right equipment. It’s best to bring an umbrella – and sun cream in summer.

Population: With around 1.9 million inhabitants, Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany.

Public transport: Hop on and off you go: Travel as much as you like with your Hamburg City Pass with local transport in the AB area, including the airport, on all S-Bahn trains, underground trains, buses and the HVV harbour ferries.
