Day trip to Figueres and Girona – the land of Dalí

On the riverbank in Girona Church in Girona In front of the Dali Museum in Figueres In the Dali Museum in Figueres

Figueres is the Surrealist city par excellence. Its most illustrious citizen, Salvador Dalí, had a museum constructed in the old municipal theatre building to allow visitors to fully immerse themselves in his world and enjoy an unforgettable experience. A short distance away is the provincial capital of Girona, which offers a trip through one of Europe’s best preserved Jewish quarters and a route through a medieval environment dominated by the river, where its colourful ‘hanging’ houses lend it an almost magical air.

Travel back in time to discover the medieval city of Girona. Journey through the scenic Catalan countryside on this full-day excursion to Girona and Figueres. Visit the best preserved Jewish Quarter of Europe and marvel at the Gothic Cathedral. Continue to Dali’s hometown, travel to Figueres to visit the Dali Theatre-Museum, the largest surrealist object in the world.

Figueres is the town where Salvador Dalí was born and where the Surrealist genius designed his unique museum. This route includes a visit to the Dalí Theatre and Museum and a stroll through the city of Girona, with a special emphasis on its Jewish quarter, which is one of the best preserved in Europe.

First stop: Girona

In Girona, situated on the River Onyar, three of the world’s religions have left their mark. On a walk through Girona, you can see Arab baths, Gothic churches and one of the best-preserved Jewish neighbourhoods in Europe. The cathedral is well worth a visit in Girona: during the Muslim period (715-785), the building served as a mosque. This Gothic church has the second largest nave in the world at 22.98 metres wide, after St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican with a width of 25 metres. The cathedral is located in the centre of the old town and in the highest part of the city.

Esglesia de Sant Feliu: The oldest church in Girona is dedicated to Sant Feliu (St Felix), a martyr who died during the Christian persecution by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The tomb of St Narcissus is located in the church. Banys Àrabs: This building is known as the Arab baths because its architecture shows a clear influence of Muslim architecture.

Figueres: the most Surrealist city in the Empordà region

Dalí Theatre-Museum: Figueres is home to the Dalí Theatre and Museum, the crowning glory of the Figueres-born genius and an important piece of modernist heritage. It houses the largest collection of artworks representing the artistic evolution of Salvador Dalí, from his beginnings to his last works, which are considered the pinnacle of Spanish surrealism. After a brief introduction to the history of the museum and Dalí’s life and career, you will have time to explore the museum and Figueres itself.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum and its jewels: Homage to a surrealist genius

The museum conceived by Dalí contains his best works and most surprising installations. Dalí Jewels is the permanent exhibition of jewellery designed by Dalí.
